King of the Sand

"The King of Sand has taken the throne; the authority and power of Eremus are his. But still his heart remains unsatisfied. Claimed by the darkness, he descends into madness..."

This was actually the second song produced on the album, and it's one of my favorites. It's supposed to capture the King of Sand staging a successful coup for the throne, against all adds. The whole song is constructed of different versions of the King of the Sand's theme, giving way to the final version when he finally sits on the throne at around 5:09. The full orchestra gives way to a very dark sounding pad that is used to represent the King of the Sand throughout the rest of the album. The change in emotion here was supposed to show his continued hunger for power, despite the fact that he's just taken the throne. He has no higher to go, but everything in him is still unsatisfied. The name King of the Sand has a double meaning here. The first is literal (Eremus is a desert kingdom). The second is figurative; despite his hunger for power, the character unsatisfied, and thus feels like the kingdom is as worthless as the sand.
